Annual Celebrate Oldsmar Festival Offers Family Fun and Fireworks

What’s Doing?
This annual Labor Day festival kicks off on Friday night with carnival rides and games. The event continues on Saturday night with an evening of family fun and a fireworks finale:

What’s Doing?
Get the family together and get moving, stretching and exercising along with Highland Recreation fitness instructors and staff. Good fitness habits are as important as developing a habit of brushing your teeth everyday. What better way to promote exercise for our kids than to enjoy participating in a fitness event together, showing them how fun movement and exercise can be!

To make the day even more exciting, you’ll be able to score some FREE goodies, create healthy recipes, enjoy a FREE chair massage, learn stress reduction tips, and more. Now that’s a great way to enjoy what will likely be a soggy day!

What’s Doing?
City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation and the Civitan Club of St. Petersburg will host this annual end-of-summer event at Lake Jorgenson. The event kicks-off at 9 a.m. by honoring Dennis Crenshaw, a former high school teacher and advocate for youth outdoor recreation activities. The Fish-a-Thon officially begins at 9:30 a.m. with 9-to 15-minute fishing intervals. Prizes will be awarded throughout the event at the end of each fishing period.

NOTE: Everything is provided for the contest, including cane fishing poles and bait. Personal fishing equipment is not allowed. Close-toe shoes and sunscreen are strongly suggested.

Armed Forces History Museum (AFHM) Touch-A-Truck Event With WWII Reenactors

What’s Doing?
Bring the kids to the Armed Forces History Museum to interact with a variety of military vehicles and see presentations and drills by WWII reenactors from the 1st Infantry Division.

At 11 a.m., Michael V. Ralph, historian and artist of “Titanic – A Voyage in Art” will present the history of the Titanic. Ralph’s exhibit of 27 original acrylic paintings has been extended through August 27, 2012. The presentation is free with the purchase of a museum admission ticket.

Even Better! The Bloodmobile will be on-site from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and visitors who donate blood will receive complimentary admission to the Museum.

Crossover Church will be giving away 1,000 backpacks and school supplies to school children in the community during their annual Back-to-School event. You can register on Eventbrite to guarantee your child’s backpack. Backpacks will be available for children age 4-18, in pre-K through 12th grade.

NOTE: Follow the registration process and arrive no later than 1 p.m. the day of the event with your child to claim your child’s backpack and school supplies. Each child must be present to receive their backpack, even if they have been registered. One backpack per child. Supplies are limited.

About the Henry B. Plant Museum
The Henry B. Plant Museum is located near downtown, on The University of Tampa campus. The Museum interprets the turn-of-the-century Tampa Bay Hotel and the lifestyles of America’s Gilded Age. Critical to the success of this mission is the restoration and preservation of this National Historic Landmark, an opulent 1891 railroad resort, and the artifacts significant to its history, and the life and work of Henry Bradley Plant. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sundays from 12-5 p.m. (Closed on Mondays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.) Regular admission is $10/adult, $7/student and senior 65+ and students, and $5/child age 4-12.
