T.A.S.C.O. Center for Teen Technology (Teen Arts, Sports & Cultural Opportunities) offers FREE after-school technology programs for teens in grades 6 through 12. Programs include:
— Digital photography
— Graphic arts
— Videography
— Audio
— Computers

These courses are designed to introduce teens to different media techniques and then progress to hands-on learning experiences. Participants use digital cameras, camcorders and computers. Although no tests are given, teens receive handouts to refer back to, and the practical application of what they learned is applied throughout the course. A “Family and Friends Night” is held at the close of each program to recognize and showcase the class accomplishments.

A Little About T.A.S.C.O.
T.A.S.C.O. is operated by the City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation Department, and offers a variety of positive youth development programs for teens in grades 6-12. The range of activities offered by T.A.S.C.O. includes athletic, educational and entertainment programs, as well as special events and dances.

What’s Doing?
Each month City Street Sweets offers a new opportunity to visit their shop and make a custom chocolate bar. What a great way to say “I Love You” or “You’re Super Sweet” to someone special on Valentine’s Day!

Young children will need assistance from a parent or caregiver, but all ages can have fun building their own custom creation. Choose milk, dark or white chocolate for your bar, and then select items to add in. Children can fill the mold with the items they choose, and then tap the mold to spread distribute the chocolate. There will even be special toppings to choose from for Valentine’s Day.

Even Better! City Street Sweets is giving everyone a FREE scoop of ice cream. YUM!

FREE Computer Training and Computer for Teens

Computer Mentors Group Inc. is currently accepting applications for admission into their FREE youth computer training program. Computer Mentors Group, Inc. is a non-profit service organization comprised of computer professionals and others interested in the future job opportunities of disadvantaged youths. They are dedicated to encouraging and guiding youth toward careers in the computer industry.

Who is eligible?
Kids age 14-18 living within Hillsborough County who would like to earn their own FREE computer as they learn computer technology are invited to apply for this program.

How the Program Works:
There is a one-time $20 registration fee. Each student will be offered a computer training course in computer hardware and software, whereby they can gain a desktop computer of their own. After completing the initial 3-month course and earning an IC3 Certification, the students may continue into our Advanced Youth Program where students will earn incentives while providing a service-based project to community non-profits. Even Better! All students who continue past the first three months successfully will be engaged in service-learning projects until high-school graduation as they perform projects for Tampa Bay non-profits!

When Do Classes Meet? Classes meet from 6-8 p.m. one night per week and are held at the Computer Mentors Group Training Lab. Enrollment is open, and kids can start any time.

– February 1, 2012: 5:40 p.m.

According to Ralph Smith, Executive Director & Founder of Computer Mentors Group, they don’t exclude anyone and will continue accept new applicants until they reach capacity (60). What’s the Freebie?
Trees are an important part of Temple Terrace’s heritage. In 2008, the community was named a
Tree City USA. Temple Terrace is celebrating Florida Arbor Day 2012 with a talk on proper tree care, new City regulations related to trees, and the importance of native trees. There will also be an opportunity for guests to ask questions.

As part of the program, the City will be giving away FREE potted native tree seedlings and distributing FREE copies of the Temple Terrace Tree Guide. The brochures provide information on the identification and care of native trees, and tips for choosing the right tree.

Temple Terrace Code Compliance Director Joe Gross will also explain the City’s new Adopt-a-Tree Program, whereby the City provides FREE trees — oaks, sabal palms, slash pines and bald cypress — for homeowners to plant in their yards.
