3 Tips to Help You Throw a Kids’ Birthday Party

Birthday ChildAs you’ve probably noticed, being a parent requires you to do a lot of things you’ve never done before. One of those things is throwing a birthday party for your child. What’s probably most difficult about children’s birthday parties for parents is that what you’ll need to do each year for your child’s birthday party changes, depending on his or her age. So, what worked in terms of throwing a party for your one-year-old won’t work in terms of throwing a party for your 2-year-old or your 12-year-old. Since what parents need to do in terms of preparation for their child’s birthday party changes with each passing year, throwing a successful party isn’t always easy. Here are some general tips to help you throw an age-appropriate and fun birthday party for your child, no matter how old he or she is:

1) Only Invite Kids Your Child Likes
You may want to invite your child’s entire homeroom class for the sake of being inclusive, but you shouldn’t. Your child will have a better time at the party if only his or her close friends are there. Additionally, it will be easier for you to manage the behavior of the kids if there are fewer party guests.

2) Make Party Planning a Family Effort
You, your spouse, your child, and your other children should all get together and come up with ideas for the party in terms of where it’s going to be held, what kind of food is going to be offered, and what kind of party activities and games are going to be included in the party’s agenda. Getting together as a family and making decisions about the party will help you ensure that the party is well thought-out and will please everyone involved. Make sure the birthday boy or girl’s opinions are taken into consideration especially. He or she will know best what kind of activities will go over well at the party and what kind of party venue the party guests will like the most.

3) Throw Some Structure Into the Mix
It’s generally a good idea to write out a schedule for the party. For instance, you might want to start the party with a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, and then move on to a game of soccer. After the party guests finish playing soccer, you might want to eat some pizza. Once the kids finish eating pizza, you may want to bring out the birthday cake and have everyone sing. You may want to end the party with a game of Twister® or some kind of crafting activity, like making friendship bracelets. Planning out exactly what’s going to happen at the party will help you ensure that you keep the kids engaged, active, busy, and happy.

The three tips above should help you throw a great birthday party for your child. If you’re planning a party for a teenager, you may need to ease up on the structure of the party and give your teen more say in the party planning process. Generally, however, if you keep the guest list short, plan the party as a family, and keep the party structured, you can expect the bash to be a memorable and fun experience for everyone involved!

Preparing a Party for a Pirate King or Queen

Pirate shipWhen thinking of what theme to use for a kids party in Tampa, one theme always comes to mind … pirates! Pirate parties are always a great choice. Both girls and boys can have fun with this theme, and even the adults can dress up and join in on the fun.

Here are a few party game ideas:

Sink the Pirate Ship:
Fill a small plastic pool or large water-tight container with water. Then divide the kids up into two groups. Each group has to design a large ship out of cardboard or foamcore. When they are finished building their ships, line the two teams up about 15 to 20 feet away from the tub and place the boats in the water. (SUGGESTION: You can make the game more difficult for older children by using a water pump or mixer to make the water move. Or for little ones, you can make it easier by pre-making boats they can just decorate before placing them in the water.)

Now, give each team water balloons. One by one, kids take turns trying to hit the other team’s ship with a water balloon. Once a boat has been sunk, that team loses, and the other team gets a prize, which could be eye patches, candy gold coins, or other pirate-themed party favors.

Pirate Piñata:
This is a classic party game that can be made even more fun with a pirate theme. Choose a Buccaneers piñata, a parrot piñata, or even just a pirate-shaped piñata. Instead of stuffing it with regular candy, stuff it with “pirate booty.” You can use ring pops and rock candy for gem stones, candy and chocolate coins for gold coins, and even mini plastic swords and eye patches (depending on the age of the kids). Not only will the kids have more pirate booty to play with at the party, but they will also have some candy to take home with them.

Pirate-Themed Scavenger Hunt:
This is one of the most fun games for a pirate party. Divide the kids up into teams with a chaperone. Each team must to follow the pirate-themed clues to the next location and have their picture taken. At each X, the team will also receive one more piece of a clue to finding the final prize. Once a first team has all ten photos and ten mini clues, they can then try to solve a puzzle to find the buried treasure. For little ones, you may want to reduce the number of clues to five or fewer.

You can literally bury a box with the prize in it in your yard, but I recommend burying it under a pile of clothes or toys or something that won’t involve kids getting dirty and tracking it through your house. Inside the box can be a special prize for each of the team members. Prize can be anything from a Buccaneers Jersey to a costume pirate hat or beads.

Pirate parties are fun for kids of all ages!
Let the kids decorate their own eye patches, hats or swords. Organize a play and have the children act it out. Just let your imagination go wild. Everyone loves pirate parties, and they are especially fun in a city known for it’s pirate festivals!
