“Families Fight the Flu!” Health Event

What’s Doing?
Kids Healthcare Foundation and St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital are teaming up to host a flu prevention day for families. They will provide FREE immunizations — including flu shots and nasal sprays — for kids and flu shots for adults. Plus, there will be fun educational activities about how to avoid the flu.

This goal of this event is to reach eligible yet uninsured children in the greater Tampa area, and onsite application and enrollment support for Florida’s KidCare insurance programs will also be provided.

What’s Doing?
Bring the family for a fun day of outdoor activities, including trail walks, speakers, nature stations and crafts, information tables from local environmental organizations and the newest favorite game — cockroach races! Here’s the schedule:
— 9-11 a.m.: Canoe rentals available
— 9 a.m.: Nature Photography Tour
— 9:30 a.m.: Cockroach Race (Round 1)
— 10 a.m.: Tomato Breeding with Dr. Sam Hutton UF/IFAS- GCREC (FREE tomato plants will be given out after the presentation)
— 10:30 a.m.: Rain barrels (Hillsborough County Cooperative Extension)
— 10:30 a.m.: Aquatic Critter Hunt (for kids and the young-at-heart)
— 11 a.m.: Frog Talk (Avalon of Conserve it Forward, Inc.)
— 11:30 a.m.: Lowry Park Zoo presents “Native Animals”
— 12 p.m.: Green Lunch ($5/person; Special thanks to Sweet Bay Supermarket in Ruskin for helping with supplies for lunch)
— 12:30 p.m.: Cockroach Race (Round 2)

NOTE: For those who wish to participate in the cockroach races, you may bring their own cockroach to race, but it’s imperative that you follow rules of the game. Visit the Camp Bayou blog for details.

Exhibitors will include:
— Quest Ecology discussing birds
— Conserve it Forward with frogs
— Florida Aquarium
— Little Manatee River State Park
— League of Environmental Educators in Florida
— Eagle Audubon Society in the butterfly habitat

Plus, there will be several nature activity and/or craft stations for the kids led by teen volunteers from The Solid Rock Church.

During the Spring Open House, visitors will be presented with opportunities to help support the programs and continuing operation of Camp Bayou:
- Make a $20 donation to provide mice and bedding for a month to help keep Xerxes, the albino corn snake on view in the nature center.
- Help support Camp Bayou with a minimum $10 dollar donation and receive a native plant and 2013 magnet.
- During lunch, the BOLD board will be introduced with a brief summary of the past year’s activities. Those interested in applying to become a future board member are encouraged to attend.

Even Better! All attendees will receive one FREE prize drawing ticket (TWO if you pre-register) and more will be available for purchase as a fundraiser. Drawing tickets will be sold for $1 each or $5/7 tickets, and you must be present to win.

What’s Doing?
A full scale carnival with rides for kids of all sizes, games, live music and food by Seminole area restaurants. The carnival will feature more than 20 rides, including rides for toddler and preschool-age children.

Annual Pancake Day Fundraiser by Kiwanis Club of Seminole Breakfast
On Saturday, March 9, start the day off (7-11 a.m.) with an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the Holland G. Mangum Recreation Complex (9100 113th Street North, Seminole, FL). Tickets (available at the door) will be $5/adult, $3/child age 5-10, and FREE for children age 4 and younger, and includes all-you-can eat pancakes with sausage and a choice of beverage (coffee, orange juice or milk). Sunday Family Fun Day
On Sunday, your family can enjoy a day at the carnival with discounted ride wristbands ($15 each), as well as entertainment provided by various local dance studios, karate dojo, and other various children groups. Also, there will be a children workshop by Home Depot and various other activities throughout the day, including sand art, balloon twisters, and other activities.

What’s Doing?
This is a community-based parade decorated to this year’s theme: “Support Our Troops.” Units will include businesses, local civic groups, non-profit organizations, churches, and youth groups. Some of the local favorites are the high school marching bands and fire trucks.

New this year, the parade will start with the Tropical Trot Flip Flop Run, one mile fun run/walk. Watch as participants run or walk the one-mile parade route along 113th Street in their best tropical attire, aiming to be the best dressed individual adult, child and team. Learn more.

What’s Doing?
The 2013 Apollo Beach Manatee Festival of the Arts will offer paintings, photography, glass-work, wood carvings and jewelry by 80 local and national artists and crafters.

There will also be live entertainment and an expanded children’s hands-on arts area. One of the highlights of the children’s area will be the fish rubbings by Apollo Beach Elementary teacher Margit Redlawsk.

Learn How to Be a Clown at Clown Alley Clown School

What’s Doing?
Have you always wanted to be a real clown? Or do you and your kids just want to have some fun together? Either way, now’s your chance! The Clown Alley Program, sponsored by All Children’s Hospital, has been a tradition in St. Petersburg since 1972.

Christine Davison, a graduate of the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Clown School, will teach character definition, make-up, costuming and performance techniques during this one-day class. All participants will be invited to show off their new skills in the Illuminated Night Parade on March 21, 2013 and again in the Santa Parade in December. Make-up and accessories will be available for purchase.
