What’s the Freebie?
Do you have a daughter in Middle School who is interested in a future career — or exploring the possibility of a career — in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)? NASA G.I.R.L.S. (Giving Initiative and Relevance to Learning Science) is a virtual mentoring program that uses Skype or Google Chat to connect Women@NASA Mentors with middle school girls (grades 5th-8th or home school equivalent) anywhere in the country. This one-of-a-kind program offers a opportunity for young girls to interact with real life engineer, astronaut, scientist or accountant.
Even Better! This is a FREE program; there is no direct cost to be a part of the program. However, there may be materials required for lessons (a list of such materials will be provided prior to the start of the program). Often, these materials can be found in the average home such as string, paper, popsicle sticks, glue, scissors, etc.
Who can apply? The program is open to young girls who meet the following criteria:
— U.S. citizens
— Student in grades 5th-8th or home school equivalent (participants must be entering grades 5th-8th in the 2012-2013 school year. A rising 5th grader is eligible but a graduating 8th grader is not.)
— Interested and excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
— Committed to a defined five-week summer class period (Classes begin July 9, 2012 and run through August 10, 2012)
— Have access to the Internet at home, school or public library
— Have access to a video chat program (Skype or Google Chat)

Applications can be submitted beginning May 1, 2012 through June 15, 2012. The inaugural class will begin in July 2012.
