FREE Family Movies: October 2011

There are tons of FREE — and cheap — family movies going on around Tampa Bay. We have compiled this list of the various film events to help your family plan.

Join us outside of Chick-fil-A for Movie Night: Cars! RSVP today and you will recieve a FREE kid’s ice cream cup or cone. Please bring lawn chairs and blankets, as seating will be limited. Call Chick-fil-A for updates about any changes due to weather, however the event will take place rain or shine. The movie will be moved indoors should the weather be poor.

Movies start at dark so come early to find your spot and let the kids play at the playground until showtime.

Bring the kids a little early and enjoy face painting & balloon twisting at 2 p.m. All activities take place at Westfield Countryside’s Pop-Up Theatre on Level 2, near Sears. Just grab one of the available bean bag chairs and get ready for a free “Pop-Up Theatre” movie viewing.

Sunsets at Pier 60 is a daily free family festival that includes artisans, crafters, street performers, musical entertainment and, of course, a beautiful sunset every night! Take advantage of the many FREE family movie events offered by your local Library! We’ve listed several below that you can enjoy this month. There are so many great, FREE programs being hosted by our local Libraries, however, that we just can’t put them all on; so be sure to check your County Library System’s calendar of events (we’ve included links below; just click on the name of your county) to find out about a ton of other great events going on around town this month.

Saturday Morning Movies at the Library (11 a.m.-12:45 p.m.; Austin Davis Public Library) Relax, watch a favorite movie, eat popcorn as we turn the library into a movie theater. Everyone will love this G rated movie starring Dogs.

Hispanic Heritage Movie (2-4 p.m.; 78th Street Community Library) Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the library with a biographical drama, based on the life and times of Selena, the Tejano pop singer whose life was cut tragically short. Rated PG.

October 7: Young Frankenstein (1974; B&W; 102 min.): Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, and Teri Garr. Mel Brooks presents a riotous parody of the horror film genre! Dr. Frankenstein’s grandson, after years of living down the family reputation, inherits his grandfather’s castle. Once there, he repeats his ancestor’s experiments… with the help of a funny hunchback and a pretty lab assistant.

October 14: Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964; B&W; 132 min.): Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, and Joseph Cotten. After the mysterious murder of her lover, a sourthern belle confines herself to the walls of her decaying mansion. Decades later, when her cousin arrives for an extended visit, she begins to descend into madness.

October 21: Arsenic and Old Lace (1944; B&W; 118 min.): Cary Grant, Priscilla Lane, and Raymond Massey. In this Frank Capra black comedy, a drama critic learns on his wedding day that his beloved maiden aunts are homicidal maniacs… and that insanity runs in his family.

October 28: Duel (1971; color; 90 min.): Dennis Weaver.
While driving along a lonely stretch of road in California, salesman Dennis Weaver crosses paths with a sinister tanker truck, whose unseen driver engages him in a deadly game of cat and mouse.
